Game of the Year 2004! Carcassonne is a classic tile-placement board game that everyone should have in their game collection offering engaging strategy and high replayability.
Carcassonne is, without exaggeration, the most important game release of the 21st century. It has been published in dozens of different languages, and its worldwide sales figures are already in the millions. In Finland, the game won the local Game of the Year award immediately upon its release in 2004 and has been a favorite among Finns ever since.
After more than ten years, Carcassonne was updated in 2015. With this new edition, both the packaging and content have changed slightly, and the instruction manual has been refined to be even easier to understand. Carcassonne has earned its place in every game collection, with many expansions and different sister games available. Expansions require owning the original Carcassonne.
The game is played with square tiles depicting the meadows surrounding the city of Carcassonne and their features: roads, fields, monasteries, and city walls. During the game, tiles are laid on the table to form continuous structures. The tiles alone are not enough; the other important components are the pawns, known as 'meeples' in English. Each player has a group of loyal followers, Meeples, which are placed on the tiles to collect points.
A meeple's role depends on where it is played. On a road, it becomes a highwayman; in a field, a farmer; in a city, a knight; and in a monastery, a monk. Each type has its own rules for scoring points. A meeple can only be played on the tile just placed and only if there isn't already an inhabitant in the same structure. When a structure is complete (a road has two ends, a city is fully enclosed by walls, or a monastery is surrounded by tiles), the meeple is returned to the player, and points are added to their score.
Farmers remain on the board throughout the game but can yield a significant number of points. When two structures merge, the meeples in both remain on the board. This allows players to strategically join structures initiated by others. In the event of a tie, both players receive the same number of points, making cooperation beneficial. However, a player can also attempt to seize control of a structure through numerical superiority.
Tile placement is straightforward; anyone can immediately understand how different tiles fit together. Scoring is quickly learned, and the game's tactical nuances become clear with minimal play. The game remains enjoyable over time, with the randomness of the tiles and players' unexpected strategies making each game a slightly different experience. Carcassonne is a major success suitable for a wide range of people, including families, where even younger children can play, especially if farmers are omitted (in this new edition, farmers are not part of the beginner rules). Experienced players will find it a quick and engaging filler game.
The real Carcassonne is a city located in Southern France, famous for its fortifications, which were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. It is certainly worth a visit, especially if your travels take you to that region.
