The Arlo Ultra is a truly wireless and exceptionally easy-to-use surveillance system featuring two 4K Ultra HD cameras, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use with battery or mains power.
The Arlo Ultra is a genuinely wireless and extremely user-friendly surveillance system equipped with two 4K Ultra HD cameras. These cameras can be powered by battery or mains electricity, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. The installation of the wireless Arlo surveillance system has always been straightforward, and the Ultra is no exception.
Setting up the Arlo Ultra system involves downloading a mobile app or logging into the management page via a web browser to create a user account. After logging in, select the option to set up a new wireless surveillance system. The app or management page will then prompt you to connect the included base station to your network device (typically a modem or router) using an Ethernet cable. The base station is automatically detected on the network, and its software updates automatically if new versions are available. Next, install the batteries into the cameras, which will then automatically appear in the app or browser (cameras and base station should be within a few meters at this stage). Select the desired camera, name it, and install it in your preferred location. In optimal conditions, cameras can be up to 90 meters from the base station.
Camera management is possible via a dedicated mobile app (Android/iOS) or a web browser. The Arlo Ultra system includes a complimentary one-year (12 months) subscription to the manufacturer's cloud service. After the trial period, the cloud service becomes paid, with Arlo Secure or Secure Plus options available. However, the system also supports local storage on a memory card installed in the base station.
Arlo Secure activates advanced and intelligent features for Arlo cameras. For instance, motion detection accuracy significantly improves as cameras can identify people, vehicles, animals, and packages left at the door. The service also allows users to select active zones within the image where motion detection is active or deactivated. In addition to better motion detection, the service provides enhanced notifications to mobile devices. Users receive not just a message or notification on their device's lock screen, but also a camera screenshot and the ability to start live streaming directly from the lock screen. Furthermore, users can react to notifications directly from the lock screen by activating an audible alarm or calling a selected number.
During the 12-month free period, the cloud service automatically stores 30 days of recordings from a maximum of ten different cameras (the service does not support continuous 24/7 recording). Videos are stored at 1080p resolution in the cloud, but for an additional fee, 4K resolution videos can also be stored in the cloud (Arlo Ultra). Videos are stored locally on a microSD memory card installed in the base station at 4K resolution without extra charge. If a user does not subscribe to the paid Arlo Secure service after the free year trial, the free Basic service is automatically activated. Note that the free version of Arlo Ultra does not include cloud storage; all recordings go locally to a memory card installed in the base station (card must be purchased separately). Recordings on the memory card can be viewed directly through the app or saved to your device.
The Arlo Ultra is a technical masterpiece. Arlo Pro 2 already set a very high bar, but Ultra surpasses that technical standard. The most important aspect, image quality, has improved from commendable to excellent, with the camera now supporting 4K Ultra HD resolution. In addition to incredible clarity, the camera's field of view is also very wide at 180Β°, and it directly supports software dewarping for the fisheye effect. The Ultra can also automatically zoom in and track a detected object and its movement within the frame. Thanks to 4K resolution, zooming in on the image is possible without significant loss of quality. A car's license plate in the yard is no longer pixelated but clearly legible. A new feature is HDR support, meaning the camera can produce clear images even in very challenging backlight situations. Regarding the image, it's worth mentioning that the Ultra can produce vibrant color images even in dim and dark conditions.
New features also include a second microphone, a larger speaker, and a siren directly integrated into the camera. Two noise-cancelling microphones enable clear two-way communication, preventing background noises like rain from interfering. Previously, the siren was in the base station, which might have been far from the camera. In addition to all this, the camera also features a small 100-lumen LED light that can be activated by motion detection.
Thanks to the cameras' integrated motion sensor, you can set up automatic alerts, notifications, or email messages when the camera detects movement. Motion detection works excellently even in pitch darkness, detecting movement up to over seven meters away. The system also supports location-based alerts. The cameras are small, discreet, and mounted on wall brackets with magnets, allowing for easy adjustment of the camera's viewing angle.
The new SmartHub base station included with Arlo Ultra is compatible with all Arlo Wire-Free cameras. You can expand the package with HD, Pro, or Pro 2 cameras if desired. The new base station also includes support for potentially future Arlo-compatible smart home and home automation products, featuring comprehensive hardware support for Z-Wave, Zigbee, and ArloRF protocols. The Ultra also supports the Arlo Audio Doorbell and Security Light. An Ultra camera can also be integrated into an older surveillance system, meaning it is compatible with older base stations.
Note: Only one indoor power adapter and charging cable are included. If the camera is to be used with mains power outdoors, a separate outdoor-compatible power adapter and charging cable must be used. The camera's battery life is significantly affected by operating temperature, wireless network strength, camera usage, and the number of motion detections. In optimal conditions, the camera's battery can last for several months on a single charge.
